A recent Gonzales/Arscott Research & Communications poll in Maryland found support for the death penalty at 62%, slightly below the national level as reported by Gallup (67% in March 2001). Support dropped further -- to 45% -- when respondents were given the choice between the death penalty and life without parole as the more appropriate punishment for murder. The poll also found that Marylanders overwhelmingly favor DNA testing for inmates if it is possible that the test would show their innocence; 89% supported testing and only 7% were opposed.
