A research by Australia SCAN, which has tracked social attitude and lifestyles for the past five years showed that in 2000 Australians felt private freedoms needed to be balanced with a strict behavioural code. Australia SCAN's polling uncovered support for corporal punishment in schools rose from 39 per cent in 1998 to 46 per cent in 2000. As for capital punishment, the country was united in its support for the death penalty. So much so that it would be likely to succeed if put to a referendum.
