A Sharia court in Dutse, Yobe State sentenced Bello Abdulkadir to 80 strokes of the cane for drunkenness.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the punishment was immediately executed at the premises of the court, watched by a scanty crowd.
Police prosecutor Kabiru Uba had told the court that Abdulkadir was drunk when he was arrested in Dutse early in February, a charge the accused admitted but begged for leniency.
In his judgment Judge Jazuli Rabi'u Ringim said the convict should be released after receiving the lashes, but urged Muslims to desist from un-Islamic acts.
