A Sharia court in Gusau Local Gov-ernment Area of Zamfara State sentenced a 40-year-old man, Nagogo Kakumi, to 40 strokes of the cane and two months imprisonment for contravening the Sharia law by marrying five wives at the same time.
The court also dissolved the marriage between the convict and Malama Tabawa Ibrahim, one of the five wives, who solicited the court's intervention in the matter.
Delivering judgement, the Judge, Alhaji Ibrahim Garba, said that the court was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the convict was guilty of the offence.
He said the "intensive investigation" carried out by the court revealed that the convict was married to five wives at a time, whose names were Salame, Saratu, Asabe, Binta, and the complainant, Tabawa.
He advised the convict to be of good behaviour after serving his jail term, and gave him one month within which to appeal against the judgement if he was not satisfied.
Tabawa had dragged Kakumi to the Sharia court for contravening the Islamic code by marrying five wives. Four prosecution witnesses testified in the case.
