A Singapore court sentenced two Thai men to hang for a gangland-style killing of a countryman who ran a vice den, court documents showed.
Thongthot Yordsa-Art and Dornchinnamat Yingyos, along with four unknown men, attacked the victim with swords and chains on June 2, 2001 after he warned Thongthot's girlfriend at knifepoint not to sell drugs in his territory.
Saenphan Thawan, who died of severe head injuries, ran a drug, gambling and prostitution den on a vacant plot of land occupied by Thai squatters.
Saenphan, also known as Yaou, was described by witnesses during the 11-day trial as a "fearsome man", the Straits Times newspaper reported.
"Yaou was chased around in the darkness of the night and finally felled by blows from one or more members of the assembly, aided or assisted by the stab wounds inflicted by the first accused (Thongthot)," the court documents said.
Singapore, which relies on tens of thousands of semi-skilled foreign labourers to do work like construction and child-minding, mandates the death penalty for murder and major drug trafficking offences.
