A South Korean man was executed in China on for murdering his Chinese girlfriend and her sister. The 64-year-old, identified only by the initial of his family name, "S," was put to death around 11 a.m. (Korean time), the Korean Foreign Ministry said, citing information provided by the Chinese government.
He had been arrested in November, 2001, on charges of murdering the ethnic Korean sisters, aged 38 and 41, respectively.
He was sentenced to death at the first trial in July 2003 and the ruling was upheld at the second trial in December of that year. The Supreme People's Court approved his execution earlier in the month. It was the second time a South Korean had been executed in China.
In 2001, a 41-year-old man, identified only as Shin, was put to death for drug trafficking. After the convict received the death sentence, the Seoul government made various diplomatic efforts to have his sentence commuted, but the Chinese authorities were adamant in their stance that his crime was too serious for his sentence to be reduced.
