Oliviero Toscani's new video clip against the death penalty in promotion of Hands Off Cain's international campaign for a universal moratorium on executions established by the UN General Assembly, was shown this morning at the European Institute of Design in Milan.
The 30 second clip shows the faces of the death row convicts Toscani was able to photograph in the United States for the campaign "We on Death Row".
In presenting the work, Toscani said that "When we talk about the death penalty, we almost always talk about America. But I want to state that the United States was also the country that allowed me access to death row to give a face, a name and a voice to the condemned. In good or bad, the United States are always used as an example".
"Now," continued Sergio D'Elia, Secretary of Hands Off Cain, "we want to start a campaign for the unnamed on death row, those without a face who have been forgotten on death rows in totalitarian or illiberal countries such as China, Iran and Cuba, those which account for 98.7% of all capital executions".
The initiative was also an occasion to re-launch the online campaign against the death penalty that Hands Off Cain is conducting together with Nexta media
The event was co-sponsored by the European union, Fastweb, the European Institute of Design, Nazionale Italiana Cantanti, Radical Radio and Planet, the SKY TV channel which will be the first to air Toscani's new work.
