A special court Noakhali, Bangladesh, condemned a youth to death and sentenced another to life term in jail for throwing acid on a teenage girl in 1999.
The court awarded capital punishment to Khorshed Alam of Senbagh upazila in absentia and his fellow-villager Khaju Mia life term imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, the two hurled acid on Zannatul Ferdous, 15, a student, on October 29, 1999 after she turned down a marriage offer by one of the youths.
Khorshed went into hiding after a case against him and Khaju Mia was filed with the police.
The ill-fated girl was taken to Florida Hospital, USA with the help of a human rights organisation after long treatment at a local health complex and the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
