A spokesman for the banned Falun Gong group claimed that Chinese security forces have been ordered to shoot members of the banned cult caught posting banners and signs in public.
Zhang Erping told reporters at a gathering in New York in front of the Chinese consulate that the order came from Chinese President Jiang Zemin.
"Recently, Jiang Zemin issued orders that if the Falun Gong practitioners are posting flyers or signs, they (the security services) can shoot," Zhang said.
"This has happened already," he added. "Three or four people were shot in the legs while hanging signs in Liaoning and Jilin provinces. They are being treated in the hospital."
"Now, each province is preparing a list of people to be prosecuted on capital punishment charges," Zhang alleged.
The Falun Gong's New York-based headquarters said in a statement that Jiang had also ordered security forces to apprehend and "kill without mercy" Falun Gong practitioners responsible for broadcasting footage that they said exposes the Chinese president's persecution of Falun Gong.
