A Thai and an Indian, namely Saelow Praset, 55, and Ayodya Praset Combay, 57, both sentenced to death for trying to smuggle heroin into Indonesia, expressed complaints to the press over the long delay concerning the reply to their application for a Presidential pardon, filed in 1999.
During a ceremony of the granting of remissions to prison inmates on the occasion of the 57th anniversary of Indonesian Independence at the maximum-security jail in Medan, they told the press that even as foreigners who had been sentenced to death by the Indonesian government, they have the right to apply for a pardon from the head of state.
"We are still hoping for a reply from the government and the President, and may some day still to return to our respective countries," they told the news reporters who visited the jail in Tanjung Gusta, Medan.
Saelow Praset told ANTARA that they felt very sad seeing some of their fellow inmates got a remission. But he also fully realized that it would be impossible for a convicted person like him on death row for smuggling 12.9 kg of heroin case to be granted remission from the Indonesian government. He said now his only hope left is a presidential pardon. He had been jailed for almost eight years now without being visited by his relatives from Thailand.
"I hope the coverage by the press would be responded to by the government," said Saelaw Praset, who happens to be the uncle of a Thai woman, Namsong Sirilak, also on death row at the women's penitentiary in Medan.
Namsong Sirlak, 29, also sentenced to death in the same case, said she is leaving everything to the Indonesian government and always prayed to God for punishment other than the gallows.
The Thai woman, who has a child living in Thailand, also said that she also has not received a reply to her application for a presidential pardon she had tendered about three years ago.
Namsong Sirlak, along with Saelaw Praset and Ayodya Praset Combay, were arrested by Medan's Polonia international airport security personnel in 1994 for trying to smuggling 12.9 kg of heroin into the country.
