A total of 121 death row convicts were awaiting execution in prisons nationwide, the Malaysian Senate was told. Deputy Home Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said the number included four women at the Kajang Prison.
"Most of them were sentenced to death under Section 39 (B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1985," he said to a question from Senator Datuk Syed Ali Syed Abbas Alhabshee.
Chor said 77 of the death row inmates, including three women, were sentenced under this section.
As for the other cases, 36 including one woman, were sentenced to death for committing murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, four under Section 3 of the Firearms Act and four under Section 121 of the Penal Code.
"After receiving their death sentences from the High Court, usually it will take about two years for their execution," he said.
However, some of the cases exceeded more than 10 years due to appeals filed by the convicts, said Chor.
Chor said an appeal would be heard by the Court of Appeal, and if it was turned down, would go to the Federal Court.
He said if it was still rejected, then a death row inmate would have his last avenue by submitting an appeal to the State Pardons Board. Chor said 52 of the death row convicts were in Kajang Prison, 16 in Taiping Prison, 15 Sungai Buloh Prison, 10 in Penang Prison, seven in Pengkalan Chepa Prison, five in Kota Kinabalu Prison, four in Kajang Women's Prison, three each in Kuching and Alor Setar prisons, two each in Sibu and Johor Baharu prisons and one each in Sri Aman and Miri prisons.
