a trial court in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, sentenced a man to death for killing his wife at a remote village of the district about 10 years earlier.
The convict was identified as Nurul Islam, 40, of Hatgodagari village under Paba upazila district. Judge AKM Sirajul Islam of the Special Tribunal for Prevention of Women and Children Repression found the convict guilty under Section 10(1) of the Women and Children Repression Control Act 1995. Another two accused identified as Mainul Islam and Parul Begum were acquitted, as the charges against them could not be proved. According to the prosecution, Nurul Islam frequently tortured Razia Begum, his wife of 12 years, for her dowry of Taka 25,000. On June 7, 1998, Nurul Islam beat his wife and forcibly poured poison in her mouth causing her death.
