According to an ABCNEWS.com telephone survey, support for the death penalty is dropping. Support for the death penalty itself has fallen, from a high of 77% in a 1996 poll to 64% now. Support drops even further, to below 50%, when the alternative punishment of life in prison without parole is offered. When the survey asked those polled which punishment they prefer, death or life without parole, support for the death penalty dropped from 64% to 48%. The survey sampled 1,006 adults and the results have a three-point error margin.
