Additional District and Sessions Judge of Bhola, Mia Mohammad Sharif Hossain convicted Saiful Islam and his second wife Fazilatunessa for murder and sentenced them to death by hanging. They were found guilty of killing Islam's wife Shefali Begum, 26, of Dalalpur village in Borhanuddin thana. Begum was murdered at her home on January 17, 1996. She was hit by a sharp weapon.
