U.N. Special Rapporteur on summary executions Asma Jahangir voiced concern over what she said were increasing rights abuses in the Himalayan kingdom's fight with Maoist rebels. Asma Jahangir said innocent people had been caught up in the violence between police and the insurgents who are fighting to topple the country's constitutional monarchy. "I am deeply concerned by reports and information received about the number of people who have been extra-judicially executed, and at least in one instance massacred by police forces". She said many people had disappeared after being arrested or taken into custody, and even women and children had not escaped "this vicious circle of violence and counter-violence".
