Afghanistan's Taliban authorities said they were willing to put Islamic militant Osama bin Laden on trial before an Islamic court if the United States provides solid proof of his involvement in the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
"If U.S. is not satisfied with his trial in Afghanistan, we are ready to find an Islamic way to put him on trial," the Taliban ambassador to Pakistan, Abdul Salam Zaeef, said.
The UN Security Council has repeatedly demanded that the Taliban turn bin Laden over to the U.S. or to another country where he would be brought to justice.
The Taliban have suggested he could be tried in absentia in an Islamic court in a third country, in which case he could testify via satellite from Afghanistan and they would commit in advance to carrying out the court's verdict, be it his expulsion from Afghanistan, life imprisonment or even his execution.
