Africa's youngest country, Eritrea, has launched a clampdown on political reformists, students and journalists, according to campaigners.
Human Rights Watch said President Issaias Aferwerki was "using the world's preoccupation with other events" to silence critics of his policies during Eritrea's most recent border war with Ethiopia, which ended in 2000.
Amnesty International said the arrests the previous week of 11 former government officials and the closure of the country's private press was an indication of growing repression in the country.
The 11 arrested people - who potentially face the death sentence for treason - are among 15 personalities who signed a public letter in May criticising President Afewerki for ruling in an "illegal and unconstitutional" manner.
