Aggravated murder, spying and treason are capital crimes. The last execution was held in 1967. The formal abolition of the death penalty has never been the object of political debate, neither on an institutional nor social level. Experts largely agree that such a proposal would be unpopular, since it would go against the cultural and traditional values of the Senegalese. However, all political forces in the country are strongly convinced of the inapplicability of the death penalty. It has only been imposed four times, twice for political offenses, twice for common crimes.
