Ahmad Samanzehi, an armed Afghan bandit, sentenced to death by an Iranian revolutionary court for illegal possession of prohibited drugs, was hanged at dawn in northeastern Iran. He was carrying 10 kilograms of heroin and 50 kilos of opium when he was arrested in March.
Iranian law imposes the death penalty for possession of more than 30 grams of heroin or five of opium.
The daily Qods reported that security forces killed four armed Afghan bandits in the (eastern) border region of Tybad. Other press reports said that police have killed 58 armed Afghan bandits and released 65 hostages in their captivity in Tybad over the past four months. An unnamed major ringleader was reportedly killed in a shoot-out with Iranian security forces in the border city of Marand in northwestern Iran.
