the Criminal Court in Batna province, eastern Algeria, sentenced a man identified as Fayçal. M to death. He was charged with attempting to kill a self defence guard in Chemra municipality. He has links with the terror group which plotted the assassination attempt against President Bouteflika, during his visit to Batna in September 2007. The court also issued the death penalty to a brother of a smuggler of cigarettes. He was charged with causing the death of a National Gendarmerie Officer who chased cigarettes traffickers at Barika, in Batna.
