Amin Halef Ala, 31, a Palestinian man was sentenced to death by firing squad for supplying Israel with information about top Islamic militants. According to the charge sheet, Ala provided Israel with intelligence that helped it kill leading Hamas bombmaker Yahya Ayash in 1996 and then pinpoint the whereabouts of the current commander of its military wing, Mohammad Deif, last month. Deif was wounded in September when Israeli helicopters fired missiles into Gaza City in a strike Hamas said was intended to kill the commander. Ala's death sentence requires ratification by Palestinian President Yasser Arafat. There is no right of appeal. Three men have been executed on similar charges since Palestinians launched their current revolt in September 2000.
