The International Federation of Human Rights Leagues protested against attempts to intimidate Sebastian Kayembe, a Congolese advocate who is defending several suspected assassins of former President Laurent Desire Kabila.
According to the FIDH, armed civilians and soldiers had on October 15 kidnapped Kayembe and taken him to the bush where they tortured him before abandoning him.
The lawyer also heads the Democratic Republic of Congo's human rights observatory.
"This kind of violence and attempts to intimidate human rights defenders and lawyers doing their job are obvious breaches of DRC's international commitments," the federation said in a press statement issued in Paris.
Meanwhile, the human rights defence NGO also denounced the 115 death penalties demanded by the public prosecutor of the military court against President Kabila's alleged assassins.
It said that the trial of Kabila's former aide-de-camp and his co-accused was taking place in an atmosphere of fear and a parody of justice as in all military tribunals.
FIDH urged DRC authorities to dismantle the military tribunal and restore the moratorium on the application of the death sentence.
