Amina Lawal Kurami, a single mother of 30, had her appeal rejected by an Islamic high court in northern Nigeria and thus came one step closer to being stoned to death for having sex out of wedlock. Amina Lawal Kurami was sentenced in March after giving birth to a daughter more than nine months after divorcing. The stoning has been delayed until her baby is weaned in January 2004. "We uphold the judgment from the lower court," said judge Aliyu Abdullahi, who took an hour to read the verdict on behalf of four judges at the Islamic high court at Funtua, in Nigeria's Katsina state. Many of the 60 people who packed the small courtroom shouted "God is great" in the Hausa dialect as Kurami wept. The judge said the sentence would be carried out as soon as Kurami finishes breast-feeding her baby.
