Amina Lawal, the Nigerian woman sentenced to death last year for adultery by a Sharia court in the state of Katsina, will not be stoned, Zamfara state Minister for Women and Children's Affairs, Amina Yusuf Garba, told the Italian daily Avvenire.
"I fully support that woman and know for certain that the court of appeals will now correct the error made by the court of first instance," said the minister, in Italy together with the Governor of Zamfara, Alhaji Ahmad Sani.
Amina's appeal hearing is due to take place on August 27.
"Sharia is neither right nor wrong, it is God's law and without discussion," the Minister said.
"Unfortunately if ill applied, due to ignorant judges, it can reach unacceptable extremes," the Minister added.
12 northern Nigerian states, out of the country's 36, have introduced Islamic Sharia law into their criminal codes since 1999.
