Vice Justice Minister of Kenya Njeru Githae announced his governments intention to abolish the death penalty and to declare a general amnesty affecting all convicts on death row for 20 years or more.
Githae, who announced the proposal whilst speaking in Kirinyaga, central Kenya, during a funds drive in favour of a local Catholic church, said capital punishment was "unjust" and that with the adoption of the new Constitution hanging would most probably be abolished from the law books.
