Amnesty International announced that the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council said that the Presidential council ratified the death sentence of 128 people, already confirmed by the Court of Cassation. According to some sources, the executions, that could shortly be held, will be done in groups of 20 a week. The judicial council has not released information about the identity of the condemned and the single cases in question. The sentences were pronounced at first instance by penal tribunals in Baghdad, Bassora and other cities and provinces, on charges under the Iraqi penal code and anti terrorism laws, in particular for murder and kidnapping. The presidential council that ratified the sentences is composed of the President of the Republic and his two vice presidents.
