Amnesty International "is not opposed" to the hypothesis of a resolution for a death penalty moratorium at the UN General Assembly.
It is just waiting for the right moment to give support at the UN for such an initiative. This was the statement made Monday by Marco Bertotto, Italian President for the organisation, in response to Marco Pannella, President of Hands Off Cain, according to whom Amnesty is opposing such a possibility.
"Amnesty International does not share Hands Off Cain's beliefs regarding the broad support of states which would sponsor an incisive resolution at the General Assembly and moreover has serious doubts regarding the possibility, in present conditions, of achieving a moratorium.
Moving the moratorium debate from the Commission on human Rights (where Amnesty is engaged on the front line) to the General Assembly, and receiving a not improbable defeat, represents a risk which Amnesty not only considers inopportune, but susceptible of further damaging the abolitionist strategy," Bertoli said.
"Considering the degree of internal organisation and diplomatic strength of the states which still apply the death penalty, we believe the right thing to do would be to wait for a more opportune moment in which to sustain the moratorium proposal," Bertotto added.
