Amnesty International said Papua New Guinea's pursuit of the death penalty was leaving it internationally isolated and called on the country to place an immediate moratorium on any executions. While PNG introduced the death penalty in 1991, no prisoners have yet been executed, despite a number having been sentenced to death. Amnesty condemned PNG moves to study the implementation of the death penalty in other countries, including Singapore, as it contemplated imposing executions. The group said that PNG was the only country in the South Pacific still actively seeking the death penalty.
