An AustralSCAN survey shows Australians would approve a referendum on capital punishment. According to the May 2001 survey, 43.5 per cent of Australians support capital punishment, with support highest in South Australia, at 55.7 per cent. Forty-eight per cent of Queensland residents support capital punishment, while a third are opposed and the remainder are undecided. Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie, says the Australian Labor Party will never support capital punishment, because the court system makes mistakes.
