An Indonesian militiaman who killed New Zealand soldier Leonard Manning in East Timor was jailed for six years.
Yacobus Bere, 37, was given less than half the 15-year maximum sentence for second-degree murder. Prosecutors had reduced their charge from premeditated killing with intent, which carries the death sentence, to killing with intent. They had sought a 12-year jail term.
Private Manning, 24, was serving with a United Nations peacekeeping force in East Timor when he was shot dead and his body mutilated on July 24, 2000.
