An interior designer, who had been on death row since 1997 for drug trafficking, walked free after his appeal was allowed by the Court of Appeal.

Court of Appeal judges Datuk Denis Ong, Datuk K.C. Vohrah and Datuk Wira Mohd Noor Ahmad unanimously held that there is insufficient evidence to convict Tan for drug trafficking. The judges said the charge was defective as it alleged that Tan, who was arrested on May 18, 1994, had trafficked drugs while he was in police detention.
