An Oklahoma City federal judge overturned the death sentence of a man convicted of the 1993 rape and murder of a 21-year-old Indonesian student, Sri Sedjati Sugeng U

An Oklahoma City federal judge overturned the death sentence of a man convicted of the 1993 rape and murder of a 21-year-old Indonesian student, Sri Sedjati Sugeng U.S. District Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange upheld Lloyd Edward Mollett Jr.'s 1995 murder and rape conviction. But she ruled he is entitled to a new sentencing hearing because of mistakes made by the trial judge and Mollett's defense attorney. LaGrange ruled that trial Judge Donald L. Worthington responded inappropriately when the jury submitted a question on one of the sentencing options. The jury asked: "Judge can you tell us if we find a sentence of life without parole, is their (sic) any possibility of Mr. Mollett ever leaving prison for any reason whatsoever?" Worthington responded: "Matters of parole are beyond the purvue (sic) of the jury or the court to consider ..."
