Angela Johnson should be put to death for her role in the drug-related slayings of five people in 1993, a jury recommended. Judge Mark Bennett read the verdicts.
Johnson, 41, was convicted on May 24 in federal court of 10 counts of aiding former boyfriend Dustin Honken in the execution-style slayings.
Prosecutors said she conspired with Honken to kill former dealers-turned informants, Terry DeGeus and Greg Nicholson, along with Nicholson's girlfriend Lori Duncan and her daughters, Kandi, 10 and 6-year-old Amber in 1993.
Johnson could become the first woman executed by the U.S. government since 1953.
Johnson joins her boyfriend, Dustin Honken, as the first people ordered to die by an Iowa jury since 1963. The state does not have a death penalty, but Honken was convicted of federal crimes that allow capital punishment for murders associated with a continuing criminal enterprise.
