Apisit Nanthapisit, the leader of a gang that abducted and brutally killed an insurance manager in May 2003, was sentenced to death by a Criminal Court in Thailand, while two accomplices received life imprisonment.

They locked Virat up in a deserted house in Bangkok Noi before demanding Bt 400,000 ransom from Virat's father, Vichai Aramseangchan, who owned a noodle franchise.
The kidnappers tied the victim, tortured him with electric shocks and finally suffocated him. The killers took Virat's gold ornaments and other valuables worth Bt 410,000.
The three were later arrested and confessed to the crime.
Apisit was sentenced to death for premeditated murder, while the other two, whose confessions were useful in the prosecution, were sentenced to life imprisonment.
