Asylum seekers in Northern Ireland were being sent home to imminent death due to Government failures, an Amnesty International report entitled 'Get it right: How Home Office Decision Making Fails Refugees' claimed. The organisation alleged that asylum decisions were based on inaccurate and out-of-date country information, unreasoned decisions about peoples credibility and a failure to properly consider complex torture cases. Patrick Corrigan, Amnesty Internationals Northern Ireland programme director, said the Home Office decision-making was having potentially fatal consequences for those who had fled their homelands. Amnesty International UK director Kate Allen said getting an asylum decision wrong is not like a clerical error on a tax bill or parking fine but could mean returning people to face torture or execution. "These are life-or-death decisions and the Home Office is getting one in five of them wrong," she said.
