At bilateral talks it was agreed that a British Foreign Office panel on the death penalty would make an early visit to China. Foreign Office sources said the Chinese authorities were interested in the possibility of abolishing the death penalty and the panel would advise the government on how this could be achieved in terms of changes to the country's sentencing policy.
