At least 13 people were killed in the troubled Aceh region on the Indonesian island of Sumatra where an offensive by government troops aimed at containing a separatist insurgency there is now in its second month. The separatist Free Aceh Movement accuses the Indonesian security forces of frequently carrying out "gangland execution-style" killings of whoever is believed to be a separatist militant or to support the secessionist cause. The guerrillas have been fighting since 1976 for an independent state under Islamic law on the oil-rich northern tip of Sumatra. Despite several cease-fire agreements, nearly 600 people have been killed in fighting in the province in 2001.
