Athens praised as a positive step several high-profile reforms approved by Turkey's national assembly on August 3, including the abolition of the death penalty in peacetime. Greek foreign ministry spokesman Panos Beglitis said the European Union now expects stepped up reforms in the neighbouring country's legal system as well as implementation of the EUs all-important acquis communautaire.
