Australia abolished the death penalty for ordinary crimes in 1984 and for wartime crimes in 1985. The last man executed in Australia was Ronald Ryan, hanged in the state of Victoria in 1967 for the murder of a warder.
Queensland, a state where there is a big debate on the death penalty, had 18 hangings between 1901-13 and none since. The Labour Party held office in 1915-29 and commuted all death sentences until 1922 when they abolished the death penalty. Over the next two decades the murder rate in the state dropped well below the rate for 1901-13.
The last Australian to be legally executed was Michael Denis McAuliffe, 38, who was hanged in Malaysia in 1993.
