Australian Federal Police were facing fresh controversy over their policy of giving information to foreign police in cases that could end in the death penalty. Huu Trinh faced death by firing squad for heroin trafficking after being arrested by Vietnamese police working in co-operation with the AFP.
News of the AFP's role in Trinh's arrest came as it fended off criticism for giving Indonesian police information that led to the arrest of the Bali nine drug smugglers, two of whom had been sentenced to death. Trinh, who was in his 50s and had a conviction in Australia for supplying heroin, was arrested with about two kilograms of heroin in December 2004.
In December 2005 he was sentenced to death while three Vietnamese accomplices received jail terms ranging from 15 years to life. He was being held in jail in Ho Chi Minh City while he awaited the results of an appeal.
