Australia's Immigration Minister Phillip Ruddock defended the deportation of an Algerian asylum-seeker. Despite a request by the United Nations Committee Against Torture to delay the move, Ruddock said the man's case had been assessed several times and there was no obligation under the torture conventions to comply with the request. The man's sister said that he had now been given a death sentence.
