Authorities in Baghdad have released hundreds of prisoners who were sentenced to death and life imprisonment for murder, kidnapping, armed robbery and rape. The authorities recruited the convicts to carry out operations against opposition groups that are active in the Al-Ahwar area in the south, and against local residents in areas near the borders with Iran.
