The Iraqi Higher Council, one of the opposition factions, said in a statement received by `Ukaz' (Saudi Newspaper) that the Iraqi regime aborted a coup attempt by a number of army officers led by Staff Brig-Gen Salim Ali Abd al-Husayn. The coup was scheduled to take place on the Army Day anniversary, on 6th January. The Iraqi regime discovered the attempt at the last moment and executed 37 army officers after a summary trial during which the suspects were not allowed to defend themselves.
