Ayub Paikayev, who exposed links between Georgian power ministries and Chechen fighters, was reportedly tried by Shari'ah law and executed in the Pankisi Gorge. The Gorge is located 150 kilometres northeast of the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, and borders Russia's breakaway region of Chechnya to the south. Ayub Paikayev was accused of treason. Shortly before his death, Paikayev had been unsuccessfully seeking protection from international organizations and Georgian law-enforcement officials.There were unconfirmed reports - Akhmeta police officials think that they are true - that Paikayev was tried by Shari'ah law and decapitated. Residents of the village of Tsinobani in the Pankisi Gorge found two bodies. One of them was the decapitated body of the Chechen Ayub Paikayev. The identity of the second body is not known. It may be Paikayev's friend from Tbilisi. Paikayev was sentenced to death for allegedly being a member of the Russian FSB [Federal Security Service].
