BAHRAIN UPHOLDS DEATH SENTENCES AGAINST 2 ANTI-REGIME ACTIVISTS, REVOKES CITIZENSHIP OF 9 OTHERS

Manama upheld death sentences against two activists as the ruling Al-Khalifah regime has intensified its crackdown against political dissidents and pro-democracy campaigners in the tiny Persian Gulf kingdom.
The defendants, Ahmad al-Abbar and Hussein Mahdi, were sentenced to death by the Bahrain Criminal Court after they made forced confessions, according to the Manama Post website.
Another Bahraini court also sentenced nine citizens to jail and revoked their citizenship.
Separately, a court in the capital Manama on May 18 also sentenced 20 activists to prison sentences ranging from 3 to 15 years after they were convicted on “terrorism” charges.
Also, a Bahraini court on May 20 revoked the citizenship of 115 people on charges of terrorism and espionage, Bahrain News reported.
Fifty-three defendants received life imprisonment, three were sentenced to 15 years behind bars and fifteen others got seven years in prison. The rest of the defendants were sentenced to jail terms ranging from three to five years.
