BANGLADESH. 10 MEN SENT TO THE GALLOWS

ten men were sentenced to death and 16 others to life imprisonment in two separate murder cases in Dhaka and Sylhet, Bangladesh.
In the first case, a metropolitan judge court of Dhaka awarded the death penalty to seven men, four in absentia, and life terms to ten others for the murder of an industrialist at Keraniganj. Judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah handed down the death penalty to Hajrat Ali, Amani and Yusuf Chowkider standing in the dock. The four fugitives awarded the death penalty were Saiful, Marfat Ali, Farooq and Harun.
The prosecution said Enamul Haq Ratan, owner of Shams Chemical Industries, was working late in the evening in his office at Dighirpar, Keraniganj on January 24, 1995.
Suddenly 50 to 60 people of the area attacked him out of enmity killing him on the spot. Five of the accused confessed their guilt in their statement to the magistrate.
Nineteen other accused in the case were acquitted as their guilt was not proved beyond doubt.
In a separate case in Sylhet, three people were sentenced to death in absentia and six to life for the murder of a man at Golakhal in Jagannathpur.
Those sentenced to death were Nazmul Alam alias Raihan, his brother Abu Sufiyan and Mumunur Rashid alias Ohidul Alam of the same village. They had been taken into custody but were later freed on bail and all went into hiding. According to prosecution, the convicts called Akter Hossain,25 of Golakhal village and stabbed him to death out of enmity on February 13, 2003.
