the Chittagong Metropolitan and Sessions Court, Bangladesh, sentenced two people to death and two others to life term imprisonment for murder. Nasiruddin alias Nasira of Chandanagar and Abdul Malek of Jalalabad were condemned to the death by the court, while Abdul Khalek of Jalalabad and Rasul Amin of Chandanagar were sentenced to life term imprisonment.
Of them, Nasiruddin, Abdul Malek and Abdul Khalek were tried in absentia.
The court acquitted eight other accused, as the allegation brought against them could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, the accused abducted and confined Babar, 22, from a brickyard in Chandannagar on October 16, 1996.
As his younger brother Azad and father Shafiqur Rahman went to release him from their captivity, the terrorists sprayed bullets on them, leaving Azad dead on the spot and Shafiqur injured. Babar later managed to escape.
