a Speedy Trial Tribunal in Dhaka, Bangladesh, sentenced to death Shafiqul Alam Shafi and his mother Feroza Begum for killing his pregnant wife Tania Akhter Lucky after the latter refused to pay dowry.
It was reported that Lucky and Shafi of Kathaldia Beraid village were married on July 20, 2001. After about a year, Shafi asked his wife to bring Taka 500,000 (6,000 Euro) from her father's home as dowry, but the victim refused.
The accused then started physically torturing Lucky, beating her often. The beatings culminated in her murder on June 2, 2004. The accused then went to the residence of the victim's parents and informed them that Lucky had fled away with clothes and ornaments. Not believing their version of events, the parents went to the police. Feroza admitted to the murder under interrogation and led authorities to the place where they had buried the body.
