a court in Bangladesh sentenced Abul Kaiser Chisti, the husband of a high-profile television presenter, to death by hanging after convicting him of her murder. Irin, 32, the presenter of a prime-time variety show, was gunned down in front of her four-year-old daughter as she sipped a cup of tea at a roadside stall in October 2001. A special fast-track court in the capital Dhaka convicted and sentenced to death Irin's husband and his brother Mahmud, who pulled the trigger, said special public prosecutor Mohammad Mainuddin. The court heard that the two brothers decided to kill Irin after she protested an affair her husband had had with another woman. Irin was a presenter for the show Ananda Ananda (Joy and Joy) on state-owned Bangladesh Television for more than two years. The show's co-presenter Sohel Haider Chowdhury, who was charged with involvement in the killing after an accusation by the victim's sister, was acquitted of all charges, added Mainuddin.
