BANGLADESH: MAN GETS DEATH SENTENCE 9 YEARS AFTER KILLING WIFE
A Dhaka court on July 21, 2026 sentenced a man to death for the murder of his wife in the capital in 2017.
Dhaka additional metropolitan sessions judge Md Sadekin Habib Bappi awarded Monir Hossain death sentence for killing his wife Soma by slitting her throat in the capital’s Badda. He was also fined Tk 1,00,000.
Monir was present in dock during the pronouncement of the verdict and was sent back to prison afterwards.
Court bench assistant Md Abul Kashem said that the accused in the case, Monir, was on bail and after the presentation of arguments in the case on July 14, the court fixed a date for the verdict and cancelled his bail ordering him to be sent to prison.
State lawyer and additional public prosecutor of the court Mohammad Habibur Rahman said, ‘Considering the gravity of the murder, the court has given the maximum punishment. The state is satisfied with the verdict.’
According to the case, the couple got married in 2003 and had a daughter.
Investigation revealed that Monir often demanded money from his wife’s family on the pretext of business and continued torture on Soma for more money even though her family gave him money at various times.
On October 6, 2017, Monir stabbed her in the neck with a knife during a row between the couple.
After rescuing her, neighbours took the wife to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared her dead.
On the same day, the victim’s mother filed a murder case with the Badda police following which Monir was arrested and gave confessional statement to the court.
After the investigation, then Badda police sub-inspector Bayezid Bostami submitted charge sheet to the court on December 7, 2017. The trial of the case began with the framing of charges on May 17, 2018.
During the trial, 15 out of 20 witnesses testified in court. After taking testimony, the accused’s defence and arguments from both sides, the court found Monir guilty and sentenced him to death.
